By: Mike Marinaro The Mother of the American Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005. Her simple act of refusing to give up her seat on a bus so a white man could sit down made her an icon in American History. The 92-year-old had been suffering from progressive dementia and died in her sleep at her home in Detroit. It has been 50-years since that day in Montgomery, Alabama when the soft-spoken seamstress defiantly stood her ground and ignited the spark that changed the attitude of a country. Over the years, Rosa Parks has received hundreds of awards and honors, including the Medal of Freedom Award, presented by President Clinton in 1996. Rosa Parks was an empowered woman way ahead of her time. Her spirit will live on forever.
